DIY Desk Revamp

So today I gave my tatty, old, wooden desk a new lease of life.

It cost me £1 and took about 5 minutes and I'm going to tell you how.

I have had my desk for around 5 years. My laptop lives on my desk, so it gets used every day but I also use it for painting my nails. I paint my nails almost every day and use acetone on them. I forgot to take a picture, but just imagine... all the finish of the 'wood' has been removed by acetone so it looks like chipboard, with splodges of nail polish all over it. Not nice.

Today I was in Poundland and picked up a pack of 2 plastic place mats for £1.
I cleared my desk and arranged the place mats where I wanted them. The mats are just a little longer than my desk, so I put one mat length ways on my desk. This works great, as the tiny extra length of the mats covers the little gap between the desk and the wall meaning nothing can fall down there any more!

Then I put the second mat width ways at the front of the desk. This leaves a small piece of my desk uncovered at the back, but that's not a problem for me as this is where my laptop sits anyway, so it is never seen.

Finally, I just sellotaped them into place so they don't move around and voila!
Shiny new desk!
If you move things around on your desk a lot double sided tape or glue might be a better option to stick the mats down, but I just plan on working on top of the mats so sellotape should work fine.
And, this plastic should hopefully resist the acetone and not be affected, meaning when I do end up with nail polish all over, it should be easy to remove. :)

Hope this was helpful for somebody!

Astral Moisturising Cream

Hey!

I want to talk to you today about the Astral Moisturiser which I received in my April Glossybox.

First, a bit of background.
I have ridiculously dry skin. To the point that by lunchtime my foundation is flaking off my face in pieces because my face is so dry, despite always moisturising in the morning and before bed.
The dryness causes excess oil production and I end up a greasy, spotty mess, yet my skin is still flaking! I sometimes feel like an adult stuck with 14 year old skin!

Anyway, I have tried soo many moisturisers and none made much difference.

When I received this in my Glossybox I knew it was either going to make my problem a whole lot worse, or be a complete savior.

When I first used this I was a little worried. It is really thick and creamy, which I expected to make my skin worse. But, being as desperate as I was I gave it a shot. It also smells really bad. I saw it somewhere described as an 'old lady smell', which it totally is! Reminds me of my Grandma and of TCP!

Now I have been using this morning and night and occasionally in between for just one week.
All I can say is WOW! This stuff is incredible!!
I can now wear foundation all day without worrying. This locks the moisture in my face so well! My skin is just beginning to feel dry again by the time I take my makeup off on an evening, but I expect that this will continue to improve with more use.

In the space of a week I have gone from spotty, oily mess to 'normal' skin, with just a few little pimples still remaining but hopefully these will continue to disappear over the next week of use. I am a convert! I will be using this cream forever more. Especially as it is such a bargain at £3.98 for 500ml.

If you suffer with similar skin problems I would definitely recommend anyone to try it!

April Glossybox

This morning my April Glossybox arrived, yay!

I received the Rita Hayworth box, which is blue on the bottom. Isn't it beautiful!

I love how this box looks so much! Last time there was a special edition box for valentines day I was disappointed with the box itself, thinking it could have been much nicer but I am very impressed with this one!

Inside the lid is a quote from Rita Hayworth, "One of the secrets of real beauty is simplicity".

Now, onto the important part... the products in the box!
I haven't tried them all out yet, but am going to give you my first impressions of the products.

I received (R-L) :

IDC Body Lotion.
This was the product I was least pleased with. From first impressions it's just a generic cheap lavender body lotion, the likes of which I could buy in Poundland. I will give this a try but will probably end up giving it away.

POP Beauty Kajal Eyeliner Pen. Full Size.
I love a good eyeliner so I'm looking forward to trying this. I also love that it has a smudger on the end so I don't have to use a cotton bud. Although I'm looking forward to trying this, it is just an eyeliner pencil!

Lord and Berry Lipstick Pencil in Kiss. Full Size.
I am really looking forward to trying this out! I love a bit of colour on my lips and have been buying lots of lipsticks recently, Although the colour looks a little on the orange side, I would have preferred a darker red but nothing wrong with trying something different!

Color Club Barely There Nail Polish. Full Size.
Eeee!! I love nail polish! This is a brand I have been wanting to try out for a while but just haven't got round to it. I have heard good things and will be using this as soon I have finished writing this post!

Astral Original Face and Body Moisturiser.
On first seeing this product I was not excited at all, the word that came to mind was 'boring'. However, I have really bad dry skin on my face which I struggle to keep under control. So if this product is as good as it claims to be it could be perfect for me. I'm just hoping it is light and not greasy.

Overall I am fairly pleased with this box. It is not the most exciting ever but the products are very practical and are all things I will use.  I'm looking forward to trying some of theses and more blog posts will be coming up about these products.

Anybody else got this box? What did you think?

Primark Sunkissed Eye Palette

I picked up this 'Sunkissed Eye Palette & Bronzer' in Primark a few days ago for a bargain £3.

I am always wary of Primark make-up, but it is only eyeshadow and the colours are the sort I like to wear so I thought why not try it!
This palette consists of various shades of browns and pinks as well as a bronzer.

I swatched the colours onto my arm (L-R, top row first, then bottom row). My first impression was how difficult it was to open! The latch on this palette is really tricky and I snapped a nail just trying to get into it! The colours seemed nice and reasonably pigmented, but all very similar. Except the white. The white didn't show up at all on my arm, despite several layers.
Also, I would recommend using your own brush. The one included was very flimsy!

So then I tried them out on my eyes.
On my left eye I used the four colours to the left of the palette. These were the pinkier shades. I really like these colours together, they created a nice everyday look. I then finished with brown eyeliner (Me me me in Clay) and Revlon Lash Fantasy Mascara.

On my right eye I used the browner shades. I expected these to create a darker, more night-time, going out eye. I'm not sure they did. The darker shades are definitely not as pigmented as I had hoped but still they work reasonably well for a subtle, everyday make up look. I finished this eye with Sleek Black Kohl eyeliner and Essence Lash Princess Mascara.

Overall, this is not a bad palette for £3, but not amazing either. I guess you get what you pay for. It does the job but I wouldn't buy it again.

Kimono Love...

Hey!

Well, I had intended my first post to probably be about make up or nail polish, but that didn't happen!

This morning I was on Youtube and came across this video by LaurDIY.
Kimono's are my favourite thing at the moment! I have two from New Look and I literally never take them off, so I was super excited by this video. I grabbed a scarf and went to work straight away!

This took maybe an hour to make. Would be even less with a sewing machine, but unfortunately mine is back in Yorkshire at my parents. The hardest part was making the armhole gap the right size! At first they ended up hugee and looked ridiculous, so I had to sew them up a bit more.

I can see myself wearing this until it falls apart... Will definitely be making a few more of these in some beautiful fabrics.
